Commanders showing a 'lot of interest' in Oregon running back

· Yahoo Sports

The Washington Commanders still have multiple roster holes after the first wave of free agency. Washington GM Adam Peters filled many of the Commanders' needs, but some still remain. Peters focused heavily on the defense in the early stages of free agency, and the offensive players he's signed profile more as depth pieces, outside of tight end Chig Okonkwo.

The good news for Washington is that it holds the No. 7 overall pick in next month's 2026 NFL Draft. The Commanders should have no problem landing a top player at a position of need. It's important that Washington nails its first pick because the Commanders do not go on the clock again until the third round at No. 71 overall. They also lack a fourth-round pick.

So, it's not a surprise that Washington has spent plenty of time evaluating and meeting with prospects projected to go on Day 3 of the draft. Oregon running back Noah Whittington is one such player.

The Commanders recently met with Whittington at Oregon's pro day, per NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline. Whittington recently underwent surgery for a turf toe injury and did not participate in drills. He did meet with multiple teams, with the Commanders, Chiefs and Bears reportedly showing "a lot of interest."

The 5-foot-8, 203-pound Whittington began his career at Western Kentucky. He transferred to Oregon in 2022, where he rushed for 2,294 yards and 19 touchdowns over four seasons. In two seasons at Western Kentucky, Whittington rushed for 656 yards and two touchdowns.

In addition to dealing with a turf toe injury, Whittington also tore his ACL in 2023. He returned to play 27 combined games for the Ducks over the last two seasons.

Whittington is projected as a late-round pick. The Commanders stole running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft and he led the team in scoring and rushing as a rookie. In addition to Croskey-Merritt, Washington signed veteran backs Rachaad White and Jerome Ford, and re-signed Jeremy McNichols.
