Eagles sign established veteran from rival team to fill underrated need

The Eagles have signed experienced starting cornerback Jonathan Jones on a one-year deal, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NJ.com. NFL Network reported the deal.

Jones played the 2025 season for the Commanders, recording 41 tackles and five passes defended in seven starts. He has started 78 games in his 10-year career, spending nine of those years with the Patriots and one year with the Commanders.
He has recorded 477 tackles, 55 passes defended and 11 interceptions during that span. He was an above-average player on New England’s defense for several years. His starting days are probably over, but the 32-year-old could be a solid backup for the Eagles’ secondary on the boundary and in the nickel.
Philadelphia’s cornerback depth this past season was weak. Kelee Ringo became a liability, Mac McWilliams never developed into a contributor and Jakorian Bennett made no impact. The Eagles liked Michael Carter II enough to bring him back on a revised deal, but he proved nothing last year after getting acquired at the trade deadline.
The Eagles added former Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen to start opposite Quinyon Mitchell, but Jones could play some snaps on the outside in case that move doesn’t pan out.
Given his age and lack of upside, Jones is far from a lock to make the 53-man roster, but he could knock Ringo or Bennett off the team by playing well. Jones will reunite with Eagles secondary coach Mike Pellegrino, who was on New England’s staff from 2016-2024.
