Kansas coach Bill Self was ejected late in the first half during the Jayhawks’ game at Arizona State on Tuesday night, a moment that left even Sun Devils coach Bobby Hurley visibly stunned on the sideline.
Self was tossed with 6:07 remaining before halftime after arguing what he believed was a missed foul involving freshman guard Darryn Peterson. The sequence unfolded as Peterson attempted to come off a screen and cut to his left, but Arizona State’s Bryce Ford denied him space, appearing to impede his movement away from the ball.
Officials ruled an offensive foul on the play.

Self immediately protested, stepping well onto the court to confront the call and defend Peterson, whom he has frequently advocated for regarding freedom-of-movement rules. After receiving an initial technical foul, Self continued arguing and was quickly assessed a second technical, resulting in an ejection.
The rapid series of whistles drew confusion insidea Desert Financial Arena. Hurley, watching the exchange from the Arizona State bench, appeared surprised by how quickly the situation escalated into an ejection.
Kansas trailed 23-16 at the time Self was escorted to the locker room.

Without its Hall of Fame coach on the bench, the Jayhawks struggled to regain control of the game before halftime. Arizona State capitalized on the momentum, stretching the lead with a dominant closing stretch.
The Sun Devils went into the locker room with a commanding 40-20 advantage, leaving Kansas facing a significant deficit and navigating the remainder of the game without its longtime coach directing from the sideline.
