Why Jordan Spieth could regret skipping this year’s Cognizant Classic

With the PGA Tour schedule picking up pace, Jordan Spieth is among several top players who’ve chosen to sit out this week’s Cognizant Classic.
Surrounded by four major stops on the calendar, the Cognizant Classic has struggled to draw a strong field. Only one of the world’s top 30 is teeing it up at PGA National.

Spieth played both the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational, even though he hasn’t qualified for next year’s signature events. A week off makes sense with such a packed stretch.
However, it does have some downside. The early portion of Spieth’s 2026 schedule has been slow, and he still hasn’t locked in a signature event spot for next year.

He finished in a tie for ninth, but it still felt like progress.
This year, he’s playing better than he was 12 months ago. So he could have entered this week feeling positive about his chances of ending a winless stretch that goes back to 2022.
Picking up a win ahead of the majors would have been good timing, especially if he finds himself in contention late on at either The Players or The Masters.
The event also would have benefited from Spieth being there, given how weak the field already is this year.
Spieth may have owed the tour a start this week
There are two sides to look at when discussing if Spieth should’ve played in the Cognizant Classic.
The first is that there’s no doubting what he has done for golf over his career. But with all of the invitations and exemptions he has had since 2025 – including this season’s Genesis Invitational – perhaps the tour deserved something back from him by way of an appearance this week at PGA National.
This is even more valid given comments Spieth made last year about not wanting sponsor invites anymore. Taking part in this event could have backed up those remarks even more strongly.
Spieth does need to look out for himself too though. Golf is getting harsher and harsher by the day, so picking when to rest isn’t something players can afford to take lightly either – especially for someone with a young family like him.
That said, momentum is starting to build for him again after some tough stretches across recent years. Perhaps sticking with what had been working was worth considering before another packed stretch of important events comes around soon enough too.
