The Tennessee Vols did on Saturday to the No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats what the Tennessee Vols do to the Kentucky Wildcats: dominate. Tennessee put a hurting on their border rivals to the north, putting up a 21-point fourth quarter to see a close game finish as a laugher.

George MacIntyre was 9/14 passing for 125 yards. DeSean Bishop ran 25 times for 109 yards with two touchdowns. Braylon Staley had four catches for 50 yards. Arion Carter had a whopper of a game with 13 total tackles, two sacks, and four tackles for loss.

This was a slow grinder for the first three quarters. The teams traded four punts sandwiched around an interception of Kenny Minchey by Dejuan Lane in the end zone in the first quarter. And then, Daune Morris provided a big spark, ripping off a 66-yard touchdown run to put the Vols up 7-0. The teams traded field goals early in the second quarter, and Tennessee earned a late goal-to-go stop and field goal try to take a 10-6 lead into the locker room.

Tennessee started the third quarter with a 10-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a Cooper Ranvier field goal from 39 yards. The teams exchanged punts before Qua Moss forced a fumble near midfield late in the third quarter, and Mariyon Dye picked it up and ran it back 11 yards. Four plays later, Mike Matthews was streaking into the end zone for a 24-yard score and a 20-6 lead.

On the following UK drive, on 4th and 1 at midfield, Arion Carter grabbed Minchey and slung him down for a sack and turnover on downs, and with less than 11 minutes left, that was basically it. On the next play, Staley pulled in a 34-yard pass wide open, and Bishop took at five yards for a 27-6 lead. Bishop ran another one in from five yards with a little over a minute left for the game’s final points and a massive exclamation point.

Tennessee finished with 389 total yards to Kentucky’s 36 and held a time of possession edge 35:17 to 24:43. Tennessee was penalized seven times for 50 yards; Kentucky was penalized six times for 60 yards.
