‘I’m Going to Ignore It,’ ‘You’ve Gotta Have Some Credibility’ — NFL Insider Refuses to Back Dianna Russini’s Reporting After Mike Vrabel Scandal

Returning to NFL reporting after a public controversy is difficult enough, but rebuilding trust with fellow insiders may be an even bigger challenge for Dianna Russini. Her rumored plans to return to sports media have already drawn a firm response from Pro Football Talk founder Mike Florio, who says he will not pass along her future reports without independent confirmation, leaving Russini with a serious question to address before making her comeback.

Mike Florio Challenges Dianna Russini to Restore Her Credibility

Florio explained his position during an appearance on “PFT Live,” where he questioned whether Russini could regain the credibility needed to work as an NFL insider. He said his role involves sharing and validating reports from other journalists, but he cannot do that when he does not trust the original source.

“If there’s going to be actual reporting as part of this, you’ve gotta have some credibility, or nobody’s going to believe what you say,” Florio said. “Is there going to be an effort to be an insider again?”

He made it clear that Russini’s previous explanations have not changed his position. Florio said he would not amplify her work unless another reporter without similar credibility concerns independently confirmed the information.

“After everything that’s happened, everything we know, I’m not going to be inclined to believe anything. Which means I’m not going to be amplifying anything,” Florio said. “I don’t care what the reporting is. Unless and until it’s confirmed by someone who doesn’t have these credibility issues, I’m going to ignore it. Unless the credibility is somehow restored.”

The dispute traces back to April, when Page Six published photographs of Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel together at a resort in Sedona, Arizona. The images showed the two hugging and holding hands. Both were married to other people at the time.

Russini and The Athletic initially described the meeting as a coincidental gathering involving a larger group. However, reports later surfaced about previous encounters, including a boat outing in Tennessee in 2021.

Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14 while denying a romantic relationship with Vrabel. A subsequent five-month internal review examined more than 900 stories, videos, and podcasts. The investigation found that her undisclosed relationship violated newsroom standards, although it found no definitive evidence that she directly biased coverage to benefit Vrabel’s teams.

Vrabel, of course, remained with the Patriots but acknowledged having difficult conversations with his family. He also missed the final day of the NFL Draft to seek counseling and therapy.

Florio himself reported earlier that Russini was telling league sources she planned to return to work. Reports suggest she may launch a digital NFL show backed by gambling platforms, potentially focusing on interviews rather than breaking news.

“There’s gonna be a weekly podcast, on a betting platform… It’s not one of the big ones. It’s gonna be once a week,” Florio said.

This approach could give her a different route back into sports media. However, Florio’s position shows that her return to reporting will involve more than finding a new platform.
