Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has delivered a scathing assessment of Vinicius Jr., arguing that the Brazilian has struggled to move on from losing the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
He also questioned Real Madrid’s decision to boycott the awards ceremony in Paris that year, believing the club’s response contributed to the status and expectations surrounding their forward.
Speaking on Movistar Plus Deportes’ La Casa del Fútbol (h/t SPORT), Canizares identified the Ballon d’Or disappointment as a defining moment in Vinicius’ recent behaviour.
The former goalkeeper, who represented Real Madrid between 1988 and 1992 and again from 1994 to 1998, argued that the club’s public backing of the player has also influenced the situation.

“What has hit Vinicius the hardest is missing out on that Ballon d’Or and finding himself in a situation where a club bends to his will and does not travel to the Ballon d’Or ceremony,” said Canizares.
Canizares questions the treatment Vinicius receives at Real Madrid
Canizares believes Real Madrid’s decision to publicly support Vinicius after the Ballon d’Or outcome created expectations that the forward has subsequently struggled to justify through his performances.
He then questioned the influence of that episode on the Brazilian’s perception of his standing at the club, adding:
“These are things that don’t come naturally, and now Vini thinks he has a certain status, which he does have contractually…”

“Now Mourinho has to step in to defend Vinicius at every press conference.”
Canizares questions Vinicius’ performances
Canizares ultimately believes that Vinicius must demonstrate his importance through his performances rather than rely on the reputation and contractual standing he enjoys at Madrid.
He concluded his assessment with a particularly direct criticism of the Brazilian’s current contribution, stating,
“Vinicius is incapable of justifying that status on the pitch.”
