Jesús de Miguel, a striker for CD Tenerife, died after suffering cardiac arrest following an on-field collision with FC Andorra keeper Jesús Owono, La Liga reported in an official release. The 30-year-old played for Tenerife, a club from Spain’s Canary Islands that competes in the country’s second-tier professional league.

What began as a routine race for a loose ball quickly became a medical emergency, with players from both teams gathering nearby as De Miguel received treatment on the field. The match was abandoned, and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Players for both sides could be seen despairing on the field once they recognized how serious the injury was.

News of his death prompted an outpouring of grief from clubs, players and officials across the soccer world. Messages of condolence spread Tuesday as the sport mourned a player whose death came just hours after he had been competing on the field.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) suspended all soccer-related activities scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3.Social media was set ablaze with questions and accusations of criminal intent on Owono's part, who initiated the contact near the midfield stripe.

"What I’m trying to figure out is, why was the goalkeeper that far out to challenge the player in the manner that he did," MLS analyst Taylor Twellman posed.

ESPN FC is reporting the Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, something many angry fans had requested across social platforms.
