MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Drake Maye stoked an explosive 21-point surge to help the New England Patriots stun the Miami Dolphins with a comeback victory Sunday in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Patriots' quarterback threw two touchdown tosses and ran for another TD in the 24-19 triumph on the rain-soaked Hard Rock Stadium field.

His Patriots, who trailed 13-3 at halftime, erupted for two touchdowns in the third quarter and another to start the fourth to take a 24-13 and secure momentum.

"It was kinda the message we've had all year: go be the answer," Maye told reporters. "Don't wait around for anybody else. You go make it."

The Patriots out-gained the Dolphins 313-269 in total yards. They recorded five sacks in the first half. Linebacker Gabe Jacas and defensive tackle Cory Durden logged 1.5 sacks apiece.

Maye completed 16 of 20 passes for 199 yards. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson ran for 82 yards off 19 carries. Wide receivers DeMario Douglas and Kyle Williams caught Maye's touchdown passes.

Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis completed 21 of 32 passes for 211 yards, two scores and an interception. Running back Ollie Gordon II ran for 69 yards off 19 carries. Wide receivers Kevin Coleman Jr. and Malik Washington caught Willis' touchdown passes.

"We had an opportunity to make a bunch of plays," Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said. "We made them in the first half. They made theirs in the second half. That's really all it comes down to."

Neither team found rhythm early on, as rain poured from the dark clouds above. Andres Borregales made a 34-yard field on the Patriots first drive. Rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez punched the ball loose for a fumble to set up the Dolphins' first points. Those came courtesy of a 31-yard Zane Gonzalez field goal with 3:39 remaining in the first quarter.

Gonzalez added a 52-yard kick 5:33 into the second quarter for the Dolphins' first lead. Willis threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Malik Washington 8 seconds before halftime to help the Dolphins take a 13-3 lead into the break.

But the Dolphins didn't score again until just 2:04 remained in regulation. Maye tossed a 43-yard touchdown to Williams to start the Patriots rally 5:37 into the second half. He ran for a 2-yard score on the Patriots next drive.

Patriots safety Kevin Byard intercepted Willis 1:19 into the fourth quarter. Maye threw a 48-yard touchdown strike to Douglas about a minute later.

Gonzalez missed wide left on a field goal attempt on the next possession. Willis went on to find Coleman for a 35-yard score on the Dolphins' final drive. The Dolphins failed to convert a two-point conversion attempt and could not recover an onside kick, which allowed the Patriots to secure their fifth won of the season.

The Dolphins (1-5) will host the Detroit Lions (5-2) at 1 p.m. EST Nov. 8 in Miami Gardens. The Patriots (4-3) will host the Green Bay Packers (5-3) at 4:25 p.m. Nov. 8 in Foxborough, Mass.
