Real Madrid released a statement earlier today that the goalkeeper was withdrawing from the El Clasico due to illness.

But The Athletic now reports the Belgian is confident of traveling and making himself available for the highly-anticipated game at the Camp Nou.

Courtois has been Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper, starting all nine La Liga matches this season with two clean sheets.

If he fails to recover for the game, his deputy Andriy Lunin should step in to take his place in the team.

Madrid will enter Sunday’s fixture under pressure, having already lost two games this campaign and currently sitting six points behind Barcelona in the league standings.

Their form after the international break is encouraging but their recent record against their arch-rivals has been poor.

Courtois has been a key player for Madrid since joining from Chelsea in the summer of 2018.

He has made 345 senior appearances for Los Blancos, with 131 clean sheets to his name.

The 34-year-old has won 12 trophies during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, including three La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues.

His contract with the club is set to expire at the end of this season, but he is expected to extend his stay for another year until 2028.
