· Yahoo Sports
Former Texas A&M football and track standout Toya Jones, who made a memorable play in one of the biggest games in Aggies history, has died. He was 49. Texas A&M Athletics announced his death, calling him a two-sport star for the school in the late 1990s.
Reporting from the Houston Chronicle republished by Yahoo Sports said Jones suffered a heart attack the weekend before his death and was later placed in hospice care. Friends and relatives gathered around him before he died Thursday.

Many Aggies fans remember Jones for what happened in the 1998 Big 12 Championship Game. Kansas State completed a Hail Mary as regulation ended, but Jones tackled the receiver at the 1-yard line. That kept the Wildcats from scoring, and Texas A&M went on to win the championship in double overtime.
But football told only part of Jones’ story. He was also an All-American in track at Texas A&M and ran on the school’s 1997 NCAA champion 4x100-meter relay team. Before college, he won 17 medals, including 13 golds, at the Texas state track meet while competing for Refugio High School.
After college, Jones spent time in NFL training camps but did not play in an NFL regular-season game. His professional career included the XFL’s Birmingham Thunderbolts and the Canadian Football League.
