The Italian was 0.179 seconds quicker than Dutchman Verstappen, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc fourth and and his team-mate Lewis Hamilton fifth. Mercedes' George Russell will start sixth.

Antonelli has the chance to secure his maiden drivers' championship this weekend. To do it, he needs to win the race in Austin with team-mate Russell ninth or lower and Hamilton finishing outside the top four.

Lights out for Sunday's 56-lap race will be at 20:00 GMT.
