Enes Kanter Freedom’s ongoing dispute with the WNBA over transgender athletes in women’s sports has taken another turn ahead of Game 3 of the Finals. After raising safety concerns about attending the Atlanta Dream’s matchup against the Golden State Valkyries, the former NBA player has been moved from his expected courtside seat to a private luxury suite at State Farm Arena.

According to a statement shared by USA Today reporter Meghan L. Hall on X, Freedom contacted federal, state, and local authorities, along with the WNBA, the Dream, and arena officials, regarding his safety during the game. So, following consultations with the relevant parties, officials decided to move him.
“Following consultations with the WNBA, Dream ownership, State Farm Arena leadership and security officials, we have directed Mr. Freedom to watch tonight’s game from a private luxury suite,” the Dream said in their press release. “This arrangement is intended to address his security concerns and help provide a safe and positive experience for him and other guests. The suite will have additional security and will be his designated viewing location for the game. State police have also assigned an officer to Mr. Freedom at his request.”
This will be the first game Enes Kanter Freedom will attend since late August, when the Chicago Sky hosted Indiana Fever. During that game, Freedom was banned by the Sky from their home games for being a “potential threat” after he got into a verbal altercation with Natasha Cloud.
But what prompted him to make the trip to Atlanta in the first place?
Freedom has pointed to Golden State Valkyries star Gabby Williams as the reason behind his decision to attend the Finals matchup. According to the Associated Press, Freedom said that Williams’ comments supporting transgender athletes playing in the WNBA inspired him to attend the game.
“As you all know, this all started with an interview featuring Gabby Williams of the Golden State Valkyries, when she said, ‘I have no problem with trans athletes playing on my team or against my team,’” Freedom said. “Her words gave me so much hope and motivation to come out as a woman and officially declare for the WNBA draft. I can’t wait to watch my favorite player, the woman who inspired me to become who I am today!”
Enes Kanter Freedom’s remarks appear to be a satirical response to the ongoing debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports. He has already taken aim at the league’s eligibility rules, criticizing the WNBA for not clearly defining what constitutes a woman. His declaration for the 2027 WNBA Draft has become another way for him to challenge the league’s stance on trans athletes.
So with the Dream and Valkyries preparing to face off in a pivotal Game 3, Freedom’s attendance has added another layer of attention to an already closely watched matchup. And while the teams will be focused on the championship battle, the arrangements surrounding his visit have ensured that the discussion off the court will continue alongside the action.
