The Detroit Red Wings have struggled mightily to start the 2026-27 NHL season — but the same can’t be said for star forward Alex DeBrincat, who is up to four goals and eight points in just six games.

He’s been driving the bus in Motown and committed to the franchise long-term Wednesday, signing a massive seven-year, $91 million contract extension carrying a $13 million average annual value.

On Thursday night against the winless Philadelphia Flyers at Little Caesars Arena, he’ll have an opportunity to add to what has already been a fruitful week for the 28-year-old.

DeBrincat needs two goals to reach 300 for his career. He can become the fourth-fastest active United States-born player to reach that milestone, per NHL.com, “behind Auston Matthews (482 games), Kyle Connor (648) and Jake Guentzel (670).”

The Farmington Hills, Michigan native has amassed 298 goals and 603 points in 702 regular-season games and has been Detroit’s best player in the early going.

He’s been a bright spot in what has been a brutal couple of months for the Wings, who have dealt with multiple trade sagas and are sitting in last place in the Atlantic Division at 1-3-2 through six games.

The futures of Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson remain up in the air, but DeBrincat’s commitment gives the organization some much-needed certainty as it tries to move forward.

“It’s so important to me. I feel like I’m so proud to be a Red Wing and put on that jersey every night and I take immense pride in it,” DeBrincat said, per NHL.com.

“So do a lot of the guys in that room so happy to be here and happy to be here for a long time.”

DeBrincat led the Red Wings in scoring in 2025-26, amassing 41 goals and 85 points in 82 games. He has become a reliable offensive presence for a team still searching for its first Stanley Cup Playoff appearance since 2016.

Since arriving in Detroit, he leads the team with 111 goals, while his 230 points rank second to Lucas Raymond’s 232.

He’ll look to keep his red-hot start going — and reach another impressive milestone — when puck drops at 7:30 p.m. ET Thursday night.
