Minnesota's top high school basketball prospect no longer committed to Wisconsin

· Yahoo Sports

Reports emerged Wednesday that 7-foot-1 Maple Grove High School big man Jack Thelen had decommitted from Wisconsin. Those reports have been confirmed by multiple outlets, and the No. 1-ranked 2027 prospect in the state has reopened his college recruitment.

Thelen began his high school career at St. Michael-Albertville before transferring to Maple Grove prior to his junior season. His recruitment blew up this summer while playing AAU basketball for D1 Minnesota alongside Crimson teammate Baboucarr Ann, who’s currently committed to Wisconsin.

Thelen received offers from Murray State, Miami (Ohio) and Montana, and interest from schools like Creighton, Minnesota and Northern Iowa, but Wisconsin was his only power conference scholarship offer. He committed to Wisconsin on June 13, and he shot up the recruiting boards. The latest 247Sports Composite rates him as a four-star prospect, the 107th-best player in the country and the No. 1player in Minnesota.

Whether you agree that Thelen is the No. 1 prospect in the state is a different discussion, but he’s quite the talent back on the open market. He averaged 8.5 points and 6.7 rebounds on 57% shooting from the floor in the 3SSB, Adidas circuit with D1 Minnesota this summer.

Will the in-state Gophers show interest? Frontcourt players like Jaylen Crocker-Johnson, Malick Kordel, Grayson Grove and Chadrack Mpoyi all have eligibility remaining after the 2026-27 college basketball season, so adding another high school center is far from a necessity for Niko Medved and his staff. But 7-1 big men don’t grow on trees, so other top programs will likely come calling.

Thelen and Ann are projected to lead Maple Grove as one of the top Minnesota high school basketball teams in Class 4A this winter. It will be fascinating to see how the high school season could impact where Thelen begins his college career.
