The Coyotes picked up their fourth straight win to improve to 11-5 on the season and 4-1 in the Summit League. USD has won 12 sets to one lost set over the last four matches.
Medeck swung at a .333 clip for her 20 kills and tallied her 11th double-double of the season with 18 digs. Medeck ramped up her attack throughout the match, increasing her kill total in each set by two (2-4-6-8).
Morgan Bode totaled five blocks to lead the Yotes and had 12 kills at a .385 clip. Avery Van Hook dished out 46 assists to go with 17 digs.
Sierra Pokharel had a match-high 26 digs and three aces. As a team, the Coyotes tallied 87 digs, the most in a four-set match this season. Samantha Untiedt added 12 digs and two aces.
Kansas City opened the night with a .333 hitting percentage while holding USD to a .079 clip in the first set. The Yotes scored the first point of the match, but it was all Kansas City after that heading into the media timeout, as KC held a 15-6 edge. The Yotes cut into the lead to make it 21-16, but it was too little, too late, as the Roos won set one 25-18.
The Coyotes responded in set two and behind the trio of Medeck, Bode and Audrey Nelson, who accounted for nine of the first 10 Coyote points, jumped out to a 10-3 lead. The second 5-0 run of the set extended the lead, and an Ava Ball kill sent the set to a media timeout with USD holding a 15-4 lead. The Yotes kept the pedal down and would take even the match with a 25-13 set two win.
USD hit .324 in the second frame with Medeck, Bode, Nelson and Ball totaling 14 of the 15 kills.
It was a near repeat start of the second set in the third, as USD pulled ahead 10-3 with Nelson, Medeck and Bode involved in seven of the 10 points. Back-to-back kills from Ball gave USD a 15-7 edge at the media timeout, and the Coyotes were the first to the redzone as an Untiedt ace pushed the Yotes ahead 20-11. Untiedt held serve for five straight points as the Yotes moved to set point, 24-11, and Medeck's sixth kill of the frame closed out a 25-12 set win. South Dakota hit .394, its highest hitting percentage in a set, while holding Kansas City to its lowest of the night at .054.
The Coyotes held the lead for all but six rallies in the closing set, but the Roos limited the Coyote runs to stay within at least four points until late in the set. A Medeck kill began a 4-1 Coyote run to go ahead 21-16, and after a Nelson termination, Medeck put away the final three kills for the Yotes to win set four 25-21 and the match 3-1.
South Dakota held the edge in kills (59-39), aces (7-3), blocks (7-2) digs (87-78) and hitting percentage (.256-.146).
The Coyotes will hit the road to North Dakota next week as they face the Fighting Hawks on Thursday in Grand Forks before traveling to Fargo to face North Dakota State Saturday.
