NHL insiders reveal what's complicating a potential Dylan Larkin trade to the Wild

· Yahoo Sports

The Red Wings have reportedly scouted the last two Wild games, and the odds of a trade for Dylan Larkin have seemingly skyrocketed for Minnesota. Rumors about a potential deal between Detroit and Minnesota have been circulating since Larkin originally requested a trade, so what’s the hold-up?

Trading for a three-time NHL All-Star like Larkin is never easy. It became even more complicated when longtime Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman stepped down from his role in September. The entire situation has been chaotic, but hockey insider Frank Seravalli did his best to explain what’s going on behind the scenes on his podcast earlier this week.

“Kris Draper, just off a promotion, went to go see the Minnesota Wild, and then interim GM Shawn Horcoff was at the next game,” Seravalli said. “So you start to connect these dots, and you know the interest has been there. The Wild have been trying to make this happen since the summer, and when the trade request happened.”

“I believe there has been a reticence on Detroit’s part for a lot of reasons. One of them has been, well, ‘We don’t have anyone that’s actually equipped to make the decision right now.’ And the other part has been that they just didn’t really see the value there from Minnesota’s roster.”

With a new front office now in place, it appears that Detroit is revisiting its interest in trading Larkin to the Wild. With a huge contract extension for Quinn Hughes looming, Minnesota might need to get creative to acquire Larkin’s $8.7 million cap hit.

Minnesota hockey insider Michael Russo offered his two cents on his own podcast earlier this week, and it sounds like Minnesota would have to give up a lot in a potential deal for Larkin.

“You’re probably going to have to give up money in the deal,” Russo said. “That to me is what’s interesting. We know if they make this trade, you’re going to have to give up a [Danila] Yurov or a [Charlie] Stramel. But what money is in the deal? I don’t think the Wild are motivated to give up Jonas Brodin. So who else? How are they going to make the money work? Obviously, you can get the money to work if you get a [Yakov] Trenin or a [Niko] Sturm; a combination of that.”

It might behoove the Wild to retain a player like Joel Eriksson Ek, or acquiring Larkin might just create another hole in their roster, as they would still lack depth at the center position. Larkin’s trade saga has taken a new turn, but it sounds like this is only the beginning of his ongoing effort to be traded to a new team.
