The seminar was attended by ECR General Manager Dimpy Garg, senior railway officials and experts from the Bihar State Pollution Control Board, the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET) and IIT Patna.
The programme began with a welcome address by Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer Atul Priyadarshi, who highlighted the importance of effective solid waste management and its various aspects.
Addressing the gathering, Garg said solid waste management was not merely about cleanliness but was also closely linked to public health, environmental protection and sustainable development.
He emphasised the need for proper waste management at railway stations, in trains, offices, workshops and railway colonies, considering the large number of passengers served by Indian Railways every day.
Garg stressed waste segregation at source, reduction in waste generation, reuse and recycling. He said scientific waste management required appropriate arrangements at every stage, from generation and collection to transportation, processing and final disposal.
He urged all departments and railway employees to make cleanliness an integral part of their daily work. He said maintaining cleanliness was a collective responsibility of railway employees, contractors, service providers and passengers, rather than that of sanitation workers alone.
The General Manager also called for measures to control plastic waste at railway stations and in trains, encourage passengers to use designated dustbins and promote environment-friendly practices.
He stressed that cleanliness initiatives undertaken during Swachhata Pakhwada should continue beyond the campaign period.
During the technical sessions, Nalini Mohan Singh, a scientist from the Bihar State Pollution Control Board, delivered a presentation on solid waste management rules, highlighting regulatory requirements and proper waste disposal practices.
CIPET Technical Officer Anupam spoke on plastic waste recycling and management, explaining the importance of proper collection, segregation and recycling of plastic waste.
IIT Patna Professor Dr Mahavir Singh delivered a presentation on particulate matter emissions during manufacturing processes and measures to control them.
The seminar also highlighted the importance of regular monitoring, effective waste management systems, active employee participation and passenger awareness in maintaining clean and environment-friendly railway premises.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and a collective commitment towards cleanliness, environmental protection and responsible waste management.
