Alpine skiing Olympic champion Sofia Goggia said she's been worried over her health condition after she experienced "really severe neurological symptoms" as the aftereffects of two viral infections.

During a media event in Austria, Italy's Goggia said she at times would tremble so much that she could barely climb stars, and that she also had trouble speaking.

Goggia contracted two viruses while training in Argentina in September and subsequently cut short her training camp in South America.

Speaking to broadcaster Sport1, Goggia said: "When I returned to Italy, I felt I had lost the ability to speak Italian. Also, because I could only move slowly and my whole body was trembling, I worried about my life away from skiing."

The 2018 downhill Olympic champion will sit out the World Cup season opener in Sölden, Austria on October 24-25. She still needs time to recover because she continues to experience neurological symptoms.

Goggia has been among the top athletes in the speed disciplines for years, but has also repeatedly struggled with injuries. Last season, she won the super-G World Cup title.
