Alvarez is due to fight Christian Mbilli for the WBC Super Middleweight Championship on October 31 in Saudi Arabia. The Mexican has an incredible 63-3-2 record, while Mbilli is 29-0-1.
Alvarez appeared on The Pat McAfee Show to discuss his upcoming fight, but he also sounded disappointed that boxing is preventing him from fulfilling his potential on the golf course.
Canelo Alvarez explains why he cannot become a scratch golfer
Former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez started playing golf during the coronavirus pandemic in 2019 and is now addicted to the game. However, he cannot play as much as he would like because it is not worth risking an injury ahead of a fight.
Alvarez told Pat McAfee: “I found out about golf in 2019, during COVID, and I love golf so much. I miss golf because right now I cannot play. I miss golf a lot.”
Alvarez then revealed that he is a mid-handicapper despite not playing regularly and could potentially get down to scratch if it were not for boxing.
The 36-year-old added: “No. I can’t be scratch because every time I go into training camp, I don’t grab a club. Then getting back [to my best] is difficult.
“Without practice and without grabbing a club, my handicap is 10. I play in something around 80 or 82.”
Alvarez has played at several incredible golf courses over the last few years. As well as his home course, Del Mar Country Club in California, he has also played at Pebble Beach and Shadow Creek.
