A Colorado animal control officer found herself in an unusual standoff with a tiny furry creature last week.

In a video posted on Facebook by the Grand Junction Police Department , an officer carefully approaches a white and brown guinea pig in a park.

“Don’t run away,” she says softly to the frightened rodent as it scurries farther from her on the grassy field.

Kneeling, she then crawls toward it, making gentle noises to encourage it to come closer.

It hops in another direction as the officer inches closer on her knees, slowly holding out her hand over on the grass until she’s near enough to grab it before it runs off.

With her other hand holding a towel, she uses it to cover the guinea pig as it squeals.

Another officer approaches her, holding an animal carrier for her to place the tiny animal into.

Guinea pig taken to a pet store

In the Facebook post, Grand Junction Police joked that its officers were “protecting and serving even the tiniest members” of their community, adding that with “a little teamwork and a lot of patience” by its animal control team, the guinea pig was now in a safer place.

It’s unclear where the animal came from and whether it had escaped or was abandoned.

In a subsequent post , police identified the officer as “Animal Control Specialist Darcy,” and said the male guinea pig was “safe and sound” at a local pet store.

“Caring for our community’s animals takes a team, and we’re grateful for our partners across Mesa County who help make that possible,” cops added.
