South Carolina Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer fielded hot-seat questions Tuesday, owning a 2-3 start and saying he hurts for his family after seeing a stranger’s comments about his coaching on a photo from his daughter’s Senior Night.

The Gamecocks have lost three straight, the latest a 35-34 overtime loss to Kentucky that was their eighth consecutive SEC defeat, and they visit the No. 16 Florida Gators on Saturday.

Even Shane Beamer’s Critics Say His Family Should Be Off Limits

Crawford’s post sharing the clip read, “Shane Beamer goes 4-minutes long on his hot seat and fans with disparaging remarks about him on family posts via social media …”

Asked at his weekly news conference how he is handling chants calling for his firing, Beamer said a 2-3 record is not good enough and that it is on him. “I have not been good enough as a head coach, and I get that,” before expressing regret that he isn’t the sole focus of reaction to the Gamecocks’ performances.

“But the people that I hurt for are my family. I signed up for it.”

Beamer said he left the team hotel the night before the Sept. 19 loss to Mississippi State to walk onto the field with his daughter at her high school’s Senior Night, prompting a random person to visit the school’s Instagram page and comment on one of the pictures.

Fans replying to or quoting Crawford’s post, including some who want Beamer out, acknowledged that a line had been crossed, as did T-Time, a podcast co-host and self-described Clemson fan. “Don’t get me wrong he does need to be fired. But going on his daughter’s high school page commenting stuff is insane.”

Beamer said he has stayed off social media for three weeks, but his daughters, a high school senior and junior, are on it.

“It’s not pretty out there, and that’s hard for them to see. And you know, there are some crappy people in the world. There just is.”

One Gamecocks fan replying to Crawford made the same distinction. “Not defending him at all he should be gone, but when grown people go to the lengths they do, it gets ridiculous.”

Shane Beamer’s Donor Talk Draws Pushback, but Some Fans Stay in His Corner

Other fans focused on a different part of the answer. Beamer said he relies on his conversations with athletics director Jeremiah Donati, a text from President Amiridis, and calls and texts from some of the program’s biggest donors, not on what people say their sources are telling them.

He added that he had heard from parents of recruits, interjecting “I’m probably committing an NCAA violation right now, sorry” before thanking the parents of Nate Carson and Joshua Dobson, who committed to South Carolina’s 2027 class over the summer.

Another fan objected to the emphasis on donors. “Read the room man. Cool you’re talking about caring what the rich people think, while putting down the average fan…but yet you want us to show up, be loud, and give our money.”

CBS Sports reported Monday, citing sources, that South Carolina intends to keep Beamer, perhaps through the 2027 season, because moving on would not be in the university’s financial interest. CBS estimated his buyout at $22.5 million.

Despite the difficult start to the season, some fans remain in Beamer’s corner, including one who also said the Gamecocks’ head coach should have called a timeout before Kentucky’s two-point try in overtime. “I still rock with Beams. No joke, in ten years he could win a title.”

Beamer said Tuesday that, in hindsight, he wished he had called a timeout before that two-point play. South Carolina had led Kentucky 17-0 in the second quarter.

The Gamecocks’ head coach acknowledges that he knows what they have to fix with a big step forward needed on Saturday in Gainesville, the halfway point of their regular season. PFN’s College Football Playoff Meter gives South Carolina just a 30.3% chance of beating the Gators in The Swamp in Week 6.
