The Calcutta High Court on Monday questioned how the authorities in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, could determine the citizenship of four Muslim men from West Bengal while an appellate tribunal in the state was still hearing their appeals against the deletion of their names from the electoral roll during the special intensive revision, Live Law reported.
The four men – Nasiruddin Sheikh, Laltu Sheikh, Safikul Islam and Sabir Sheikh – have been in detention in Bilaspur for over a month after the foreign registration officer alleged that they were undocumented migrants from Bangladesh.
The Bilaspur superintendent of police is the foreign registration officer.
The four men were among the 23 persons detained in Bilaspur on September 4 after they were accused of being undocumented Bangladeshi citizens. Nineteen were released on September 19 after the authorities verified their names in voter lists, local administrative records, family details and permanent residence documents.
The remaining four continued to be detained after police claimed that their names had been struck off voter lists during the SIR in West Bengal.
The four men had challenged the deletion of their names before the SIR appellate tribunal in West Bengal.
