The struggles are mounting for Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers, and they’re becoming harder and harder to ignore.

The Chargers have fallen to 0-4 after entering the season as a legitimate playoff contender and potential AFC West winner. Emmanuel Acho believes Herbert is part of the problem, arguing that the quarterback is playing “one of the most idiotic brands of football” he has ever seen.

Emmanuel Acho Breaks Down Justin Herbert’s Costly Coverage Mistakes

On the “Speakeasy” podcast, Acho broke down Herbert’s decision-making in the past few weeks and pointed to throws that went directly into areas already covered by defenders.

“Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it went beneath hell. He threw a curl to a hook-curl linebacker,” Acho began.

“So last week, you threw a post versus cover three to a post field safety, and this week, you threw a curl to a hook-curl linebacker. Justin Herbert is playing an incompetent brand of football.

“Justin Herbert is playing one of the most idiotic brands of football you will ever see out of a $200 million quarterback. And if you think I’m being harsh? The film is so much more offensive than my words.”

Acho also went on to say, “Justin Herbert acts as if I just throw it hard enough, maybe the defender won’t see it. No, it’s just a fast interception. That’s all Justin Herbert is throwing right now.

“He’s throwing really pretty picks, the prettiest picks you’ll ever see in your life. So, to me, he has to be broken because this is stuff that you wouldn’t see out of Sierra Canyon. This is stuff you wouldn’t see out of like a high school quarterback. This is middle school mistakes.”

Acho definitely didn’t hold back when talking about the star quarterback, but it’s hard to argue that Herbert shouldn’t be held to a high standard. He’s widely viewed as one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL. The problem is that Herbert hasn’t taken the next step that many expected under Jim Harbaugh.

The numbers back that up. Through four games, Herbert has 816 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, and six interceptions while completing less than 60% of his passes.

Those aren’t even middle-of-the-pack numbers. They’re bottom-third numbers, which is a major concern for a quarterback with the expectations Herbert has.

PREDICT THE NFL SEASON:PFN’s Free NFL Playoff Predictor

Herbert’s PFN QB Impact Score dropped from 78.9 in 2024 to 75.1 in 2025 before falling to 62.1 through four games this season, which ranks #33 in the league among 34 qualifying quarterbacks.

At this point, there aren’t many excuses left. Harbaugh has had time to start stamping his identity on this team, and Herbert has enough experience that some of these mistakes shouldn’t still be happening.

The reads he’s making are costing his team, and whether every interception is completely his fault or not, the responsibility ultimately falls on the quarterback.

The new system under Mike McDaniel could be part of the issue, but Herbert has had enough time to get more comfortable with the play-calling and what’s being asked of him.

If things don’t get better soon, the scrutiny will only grow, and so will the pressure on Herbert and the Chargers.
