Robbie Ray got the start against Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski.
The Padres opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning as Luis Campusano had an RBI single and Jake Cronenworth drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
The Brewers tied it up on a Jackson Chourio home run in the bottom of the third, and they took the lead via a William Contreras solo home run in the seventh inning.

Ray went 2.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits, and the Padres used all of Bradgley Rodriguez, Yuki Matsui, Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon. Morejon threw two innings, allowing one run on three hits, but he took the loss.
Misiorowski went just four innings and allowed two runs on four hits, so he had a quick exit, although he threw 88 pitches in the game.
However, the biggest play of the game was in the top of the ninth inning.
The Padres trailed by one run, but Dustin Harris opened the inning with a single.
Manny Machado struck out, and Ty France hit what appeared to a be a two-run home run. However, it hit the roof and went right into the glove of left fielder Jackson Chourio for the out, and the Padres saw Jackson Merrill line out to end the game.
Oh. My. Goodness.

This ball hit by France looked to potentially be a go-ahead home run, but it hit the roof and was caught, and was ruled an out. pic.twitter.com/E6pnoausP7
The umpires gathered together, and per the rules of the park, it was an out, although it was going to be a monster home run by France.
I absolutely despise this call.

105.3 MPH at a 49° Launch Angle. If there is no roof, that ball goes over the wall.
At Tropicana Field, that ball is a Home Run. I understand this park doesn’t have the same rules, so to benefit both teams, it should have been called a dead ball.…
The central question is, if the railing wasn't there, where does the ball go?

San Diego Padres absolutely robbed. MLB clearly wants Milwaukee to win
I had a good view of that ball's trajectory from where I'm sitting.

I think it goes out for a 2-run homer if it doesn't hit the beam.
Here is what the rules say at American Family Field:
"Batted ball strikes roof, roof truss, roof cable or any cabling over fair territory, [ball is] in play. If caught by fielder, batter is out."
Whether or not that is fair is another story, and this ball would've likely gone into the second deck if there was no roof.
It is NOT a homer for Ty France after hitting one of the rafters 😱

Do you think it would've been gone? pic.twitter.com/FKzgRBS2NC
So, instead of the Padres taking a 4-3 lead, it was a hard-hit out, and a questionable call, although the stadium rules state that.
Whether or not that changes going forward remains to be seen, but to put it into perspective, the ball would've hit the Western Metal Supply building at Petco Park.
The Padres, on the other hand, left 12 runners on base and had 9 hits, but just two runs, so they didn't do themselves any favors.
This might motivate the team more.
Michael King will start for San Diego in Game 2 against Logan Henderson, and the game is at 1 pm PST.
