Getty ImagesAfter an exciting first two weeks of the regular season, we’re set for a 13-game main slate on the NFL’s third Sunday.
The first two big ledgers of the season have been a study in contrasts when it’s come to scoring, with Week 1 profiling as an offensive showcase and Week 2 offering much more subdued environments.
Sunday’s games may be somewhat of a middle ground between the two extremes, as there’s a solid-but-not spectacular four games with projected totals of 48 points or higher as of late Saturday night.
Without further ado, let’s look at a trio of bets on players that should be in good position to visit the end zone Sunday.
Week 3 TD Scorer Props (odds listed are current at time of publish):
- Jaxon Smith-Njigba Anytime TD Scorer (+100 on FanDuel Sportsbook)
- Kenneth Walker III 1st Half TD Scorer (+130 on FanDuel Sportsbook)
- Derrick Henry 2nd Half TD Scorer (+120 on FanDuel Sportsbook)
Jaxon Smith-Njigba (Seahawks at Commanders)
Bet: Anytime TD Scorer (+100 on FanDuel Sportsbook)
It feels somewhat “chasey” to back JSN for another trip to the end zone in Week 3 after he crossed the goal line on three occasions against the Cardinals last Sunday.
Nevertheless, the star receiver is in a very appealing spot once again in Week 2, both from the standpoint of his matchup and the fact he’s getting starting quarterback Sam Darnold back from a one-game absence due to his glute injury. The Seahawks have a solid implied team total of 24 points as well, which certainly doesn’t hurt Smith-Njigba’s outlook.
The Commanders have given up an NFL-high seven passing touchdowns already, with three of those coming from wide receivers. Washington is also conceding 12.5 yards per reception to wide receivers, and Smith-Njigba is averaging a career-high 12.6 yards per target and 16.3 yards per reception.
The 2023 first-round pick already has four touchdown receptions among his 17 catches, and he has six red-zone targets, including three inside the 10-yard line. Smith-Njigba had 10 touchdown receptions last season while working with Darnold for 17 games and averaged a red-zone target a game from his QB as well, and the collection of metrics already cited put this bet very much in play.
Kenneth Walker III (Chiefs at Dolphins)
Bet: 1st Half TD Scorer (+130 on FanDuel Sportsbook)
The Chiefs have been back to their usual championship-pedigree selves over the first two games, and KC has been more impressive than in recent years on the ground thanks to the presence of Walker.
The reigning Super Bowl MVP and prized offseason addition has been an excellent fit in head coach Andy Reid’s offense, rushing for 290 yards and a touchdown at 6.2 yards per carry and adding a 9-79-1 receiving line over his first two contests. He 's logged 11 red-zone touches as well, leaving no doubt as to the level of trust the star running back already enjoys from his new coaching staff and teammates.
KC’s Week 3 matchup is an intriguing one, as the Chiefs are the biggest favorites of the week at 10.5 points on the road against the hapless Dolphins. If the game unfolds as expected, that naturally introduces the risk of starters for Kansas City being pulled early, but Walker doing some of the damage that helps matters get to that point is certainly conceivable.
The Dolphins actually haven’t been terrible against the run, but Miami has yielded a pair of rushing TDs to running backs already. With confidence in a victory sure to be high on the Chiefs’ sideline, Reid may also use this game to focus heavily on the ground attack and not expose Patrick Mahomes to unnecessary risk. Consequently, a Walker first-half touchdown could be very much in play, and KC’s 28.25-point implied team total inspires even more confidence.
Derrick Henry (Ravens vs. Cowboys)
Bet: 2nd Half TD Scorer (+120 on FanDuel Sportsbook)
While I’m backing the idea of a first-half score for Walker to hedge against the star back getting an early exit due to game script, I’m taking the opposite approach with Henry in his matchup against the Cowboys in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Henry’s bruising running style undoubtedly wears down opposing defenses over the course of a game, so a second-half TD is always in play. Henry already has one fourth-quarter touchdown run this season, and Dallas has opened the season surrendering 4.4 yards per carry to running backs over the first two games. Additionally, with the Cowboys having traveled over 5,000 miles to get to Brazil, some additional second-half fatigue is very much in play.
The Ravens’ implied team total has crept up from an already robust 27 to 28.5 as of early Sunday morning, which does nothing but boost Henry’s chances of getting into the end zone. Zay Flowers (hamstring) may be available for Baltimore on at least a limited basis as well, which would help take some of the Cowboys’ defense’s attention off Henry.
It’s also worth noting Henry’s Anytime TD Scorer bet carries very hefty odds of -235 or higher – which is the reason I’m steering clear of suggesting that wager – but the one positive about that elevated a price is that it engenders even more confidence in the star running back’s prospects of scoring at some point.
