Veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks is officially back home in Northern California, and he is bringing plenty of franchise nostalgia with him. After signing with the San Francisco 49ers practice squad on Tuesday, the Stockton native called joining his childhood organization a dream come true while proving he knows his Bay Area football history inside and out.

When asked about the iconic pass-catchers he admired while growing up in the area, Cooks skipped the standard answers and dropped serious ball knowledge on reporters.”You know Imma throw out some names like J.J. Stokes, you know what I mean,” Cooks said.

“Obviously, you got T.O. [Terrell Owens] and all that, but some of those guys, even Brandon Lloyd back then, the way that he played the game—’Gumby’ is what they called him.” That genuine appreciation for the franchise makes Cooks a seamless fit for head coach Kyle Shanahan.

San Francisco’s receiving corps has absorbed a brutal wave of injuries, losing wideout Ricky Pearsall to season-ending knee surgery and veteran Demarcus Robinson to a high ankle sprain. Despite those roster hits, the 49ers have stormed to an impressive 2-0 start.

In Week 2’s commanding 35-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Brock Purdy put on an offensive masterclass, completing 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards and two passing touchdowns while adding a third score on the ground. While Cooks will begin on the practice squad to master Shanahan’s complex playbook, his elite speed and veteran poise provide crucial depth.

With 734 career receptions, 9,811 receiving yards, and 60 touchdown catches across 12 NFL seasons with six different franchises, the 32-year-old playmaker knows how to adapt quickly and produce in high-stakes moments. If San Francisco elevates him to the active roster soon, Cooks gets the chance to turn lifelong childhood fandom into meaningful, dynamic production on the field.
