The nation's top college football prospect for 2029 resides in Greater San Antonio.
His name is Ryder Flugence, a sophomore quarterback at Boerne Champion.

Flugence is listed No. 1 on the national rankings for the 2029 class, according to 247Sports, a website that tracks college football recruits.
The website has him at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds. On Flugence's X bio, he goes 6-6 and 210. In either case, it's impressive. What's more impressive is versatility, which is why he's held in such high regard.
Flugence is listed as an "athlete." In recruiting parlance, it means he can play multiple positions. In Flugence's case at Boerne Champion, he is the starting quarterback. He has occasionally seen action on the other side of the ball in the secondary. He gained valuable reps on both sides as a freshman last season.
According to 247Sports analyst Gabe Brooks, Flugence is a "multi-positional prospect with excellent physical traits and verified athleticism in multiple capacities. (He) flashes dynamic play making ability at quarterback and on defense, including chase-down juice in pursuit."
Flugence has thrown for 604 yards on 37-of-57 passing with 11 touchdowns and one interception for the 4-0 Chargers in 2026. Flugence has yet to play four quarters as the Chargers have recorded four blowouts, outscoring opponents by a total of 236-24.
Last season, Flugence passed for 570 yards and nine touchdowns in 10 games as a backup quarterback. He also recorded 36 tackles, two sacks and an interception as a defensive back.
His athleticism extends beyond the gridiron. He marked 48 feet, 4 ½ inches in the triple jump last season, which was tops for the area and in the top 20 in the state.
Flugence is one of eight Texans listed on the 247Sports top 100 national rankings for 2029. Another one includes Johnson's Braelyn Allen, a wide receiver who was the 2025 Express-News Newcomer of the Year, at No. 29. The area has one other top 100 recruit – Roosevelt offensive tackle Kaeden Scott, a Texas A&M pledge listed at No. 91 for the 2027 class.
Both Flugence and Allen were in attendance as Texas guests at Saturday's Longhorns-UTSA game in Austin. Flugence holds 15 offers, according to 247Sports, including Alabama, Texas A&M, Georgia and Texas Tech.
