Demario Davis offers silver lining in wake of Jets' loss vs. Packers

· Yahoo Sports

There has been plenty of attention paid to what went wrong for the New York Jets on Sunday. Let's be frank. In some ways, that is understandable

The 10-point fourth-quarter lead disappeared, an overtime possession produced nothing, and the Green Bay Packers benefited. They eventually walked out of MetLife Stadium with a 20-17 victory. Aaron Glenn's decision to receive the opening possession in overtime will also be dissected throughout the week, as will the missed opportunities that allowed the Packers to stay within striking distance.

Demario Davis, however, isn't interested in letting the difficult ending overshadow everything that came before it. The veteran linebacker spoke with the media post-game. He believes the loss actually provided another reason for the Jets to feel confident about where the organization is headed.

"I think it should put a lot of confidence in the culture and the organization as to where we are and how fast we're accelerating. We don't plan on slowing down," Davis said.

That's an important perspective from Davis because the Jets spent much of the offseason trying to change the way the organization operates. A loss like Sunday's can make it tempting to focus exclusively on the mistakes, but New York also held Green Bay to 199 total yards, controlled the football for most of the afternoon and carried a 17-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

Glenn saw much of the same thing.

"There's a number of things that I'm encouraged about ... We dictated that game for the most part. All the way up until 8 minutes in the fourth quarter. We have to make sure that we can close the door," Glenn said.

That last sentence is the part that will stick with the Jets this week. There is no pretending the collapse didn't happen, and Glenn's team will have to address the mistakes that allowed Green Bay to rally. At the same time, the fact that the Jets were in control for most of the afternoon against a Packers team that had just come off a disastrous Week 1 collapse is meaningful.

Davis isn't asking anyone to celebrate a loss. He's pointing out that the Jets are capable of dictating games, and Glenn is essentially saying the same thing. The next step for New York is turning that progress into the kind of closing performance that leaves everyone talking about a win instead of searching for a silver lining.
