Steve’s medical leave began on August 6, so UNC had already been operating without its defensive coordinator before his resignation. Bill Belichick and Bob Diaco shared defensive planning duties during that period.
His resignation takes effect on October 27, after his medical leave ends. Media reports connected the timing to the university probe and noted that Michael Lombardi had resigned on September 3.
The arrangement gave UNC time to prepare, but it did not create a permanent replacement. Brian’s expanded responsibility now carries greater weight after Clemson exposed the defense’s communication and coverage problems.
The staff now has a defined short-term problem. Brian Belichick must help replace Steve’s defensive role, and Bill must keep UNC’s season on track after Clemson exposed the cost of the transition. The university considers the investigation resolved, but the football consequences remain active.
