HC champion Berries gearing for tourney run

Fresh off their Hoosier Conference championship last weekend, the Logansport Berries girls golf team has been staying sharp with three meets this week ahead of Monday’s Twin Lakes Sectional.

The Berries hosted a four-way meet for their final home meet of the season Wednesday at Dykeman Park Golf Course.
The Berries shot a 178 to win with relative ease against Twin Lakes (207), Northwestern (211) and Delphi (Inc.).
Chloe Wilburn was the medalist with a 5-over 41 to lead the Berries, followed by Izzy Lundy (42), Kendal Kranz (45) and Natalie Graham (50). Additional scores for the Berries included Evie Kitchel (50), Emma Juby (51), Madilie Franco (54) and Braelynn Filbey (58). Senior Sam Baker sat out the meet to rest her shoulder ahead of Thursday and Monday’s rounds in Monticello.
It was a hot and muggy night after it had rained heavily during the day. Wilburn, a junior, said she didn’t have her A game but still shot 41.
“It was a little rough,” she said. “I chunked a lot of shots. The greens were slow. It was muddy out.”
Wilburn shot a team-best 83 at the conference meet Saturday to place fourth among all individuals. The Berries defeated runner-up Tipton by eight shots with a 357 at Tippecanoe Country Club. The Blue Devils won last year by eight shots.
“It was pretty nice winning. We kind of expected it going in,” Wilburn said. “But we knew Tipton was gonna be there and they had those two really good girls. It feels good winning there.”
The Berries have their regular-season finale scheduled for Thursday at TCC before they head back there for the sectional Monday. The Berries are the defending sectional champs.
“I think we’re going the right direction,” Logan coach Abby Lundy said. “I think we’re hopefully all in the right mindset and gearing up and getting ready for sectionals on Monday.”
The Berries won their second conference title in three years and third in the last five years. Their previous conference title before 2022 was in 1980 and they have now won five overall. They have won 15 sectional titles with the most recent since 1992 coming in 2021 and 2025.
“It’s been fun with this group to continue to have the same top five for the last two years and same thing with the boys,” coach Lundy said. “It’s just fun when you get a good group of kids and golfers and parents, they’re just fun to be around.”
The Berries will enter the sectional as the favorite.
“I would say we’re favored by a little bit,” Lundy said. “We do have the last tee group with Rochester and Rensselaer. We tee it off in the last pairing at 11. And then Twin Lakes, South Newton and KV is in that second to last pairing. With the scores I’ve seen and what we’re shooting, I think we have every chance to be in contention for hopefully a sectional repeat.
“Going back over to Tippecanoe this year — where we hosted last year as their course conditions weren’t the best — and so going back over there just coming off of a conference championship, I think we’ve got a really good shot at it as long as the girls keep the right mindset.”
