Mets fans send clear message to David Stearns during Pete Alonso’s return to Citi Field

Pete Alonso received a huge welcome from New York Mets fans on his return to Citi Field, but the home crowd also made its feelings towards David Stearns very clear.
After Alonso flew out in his first at-bat back in Queens, fans began chanting “Fire Stearns”, directing their anger at the Mets president of baseball operations.

Alonso left the Mets during the offseason after agreeing to a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles. His return came with New York already eliminated from postseason contention, while Alonso has continued to produce for Baltimore.
The first baseman entered the game with 35 home runs and 100 RBIs, having played all 151 games for the Orioles. Since June 1, his .937 OPS and 24 home runs both ranked fifth in the majors.

Alonso’s reception was everything Mets supporters could have hoped for, with the former franchise star receiving a standing ovation before his first at-bat.
Fans also broke into “Pete Alonso!” chants before the game and reacted warmly during a tribute video celebrating his seven years with the organisation.
But once Alonso’s first at-bat ended, the mood changed.
The “Fire Stearns!” chants echoed around Citi Field, reflecting the frustration surrounding the decision to let Alonso leave. The Mets subsequently struggled to replace his production, with Jorge Polanco missing much of the season through injury and playing just 37 games.
Alonso, meanwhile, refused to criticise his former team when asked about the split.
“I respect their decision,” Alonso said. “The guys running the team, it’s their prerogative to do whatever they think is best. So for me, I respect it professionally, and I’m so stoked to be an Oriole.”
He later added, “Two things can be true at the same time. I’m very happy and appreciative of my time that I spent as a Met and I’m beyond grateful and appreciative for the Baltimore Orioles.”
There was another reason for Mets fans to keep an eye on Alonso, too. He arrived at Citi Field one home run short of 300 for his career, with former teammate Francisco Lindor also sitting on 299.
For Stearns and the Mets, however, the reaction from the crowd showed that Alonso’s departure is unlikely to be forgotten anytime soon.
