On Sunday, the Cleveland Browns stumbled out of the gate with a 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road. Although Deshaun Watson did not have as bad a game as some corners of the internet would lead one to believe, he still wasn’t exactly stellar, throwing for 205 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, completing 16 of his 22 pass attempts in the process.
Now, head coach Todd Monken has revealed his take on how some of Watson’s teammates feel about him, and his blunt take rubbed some people the wrong way.
“Really to be honest…they don’t have a choice. This isn’t a debate. Their job is to play, our job is to put the best player on the field that we thinks gives us a chance to win,” he said, per Reddit user Goosedukee.

Redditors in the comment section were not exactly thrilled with the comments.
“Browns are going to be the first team in NFL history to be charged with mutiny,” wrote one fan.
“I am 100% convinced they are trying to get Watson injured to get out of paying him,” theorized another.
Many suspected that Monken’s decision to make Watson the team’s starting quarterback was a direct order from ownership as opposed to one made on his own volition, with the team having a significant amount of money tied to Watson.
Many fans wanted to see Shedeur Sanders get another opportunity at the starting job despite his struggles last year, but it doesn’t appear that Monken is considering a switch anytime soon.
The Browns will next hit the field on Sunday for another road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
