Josh West, Mississippi State baseball player who led 2001 team in RBIs, dies at 47

STARKVILLE — Former Mississippi State baseball player Josh West died on Sept. 10, according to an obituary from the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home.
He was 47 years old. A cause of death was not given.

West, a Hamilton native, was a multi-year starter in the outfield at Mississippi State from 1998-2001.
He led the team in RBIs in 2001 with 49 while batting .282 with five home runs. The Bulldogs won the SEC Tournament that season, with West making the All-SEC Tournament Team. They went on to sweep the Columbus (Ohio) Regional in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Cal State Fullerton in the Fullerton Super Regional.
Mississippi State, under coach Pat McMahon, made the NCAA Tournament every season that West was on the team, including one College World Series appearance in 1998.
West hit a home run on his first career at-bat at Mississippi State.
Hamilton won the MHSAA Class 1A championship West's senior year in 1997.
A private funeral service was held Sept. 13 in Aberdeen.
