The season opener is upon us, and Sean Mannion's passing game could hold an early advantage thanks to an unfortunate injury status. The Philadelphia Eagles will unveil their rebuilt passing game against a Washington secondary already missing one of its most important pieces.

Trey Amos will begin the season on injured reserve as he continues recovering from a lower-leg injury (ankle). His absence leaves Amik Robertson and Mike Sainristil listed as Washington’s starting cornerbacks, with Rasul Douglas and Fabian Moreau providing depth. That creates opportunities for DeVonta Smith, Hollywood Brown, Dontayvion Wicks and rookie Makai Lemon. Philadelphia can move its receivers across the formation to identify matchups and test how Washington plans to compensate without Amos.
Smith’s route running could be particularly difficult to handle if the Commanders cannot consistently provide safety help. Brown gives Jalen Hurts a vertical option, while Wicks and Lemon add size and versatility to Sean Mannion’s new offense. Washington can respond by using Sainristil inside, playing more zone coverage, or allowing Nick Cross and Jeremy Reaves to assist over the top. Each adjustment could open up opportunities for Dallas Goedert or Saquon Barkley.
Losing a starting cornerback before facing the Eagles’ collection of playmakers is a significant problem. Hurts should have opportunities to identify and attack Washington’s replacement options throughout the afternoon.
