Williams Field tops Corona del Sol behind big second-half

No 10 Williams Field (Arizona Republic rankings) overcame some early penalties and turnovers to remain undefeated, downing Corona del Sol 33-23 on Friday, Sept. 11, in a 6A matchup.

The Blackhawks were able to flip the script after the first half missteps, which led to an early 10-6 Corona lead.

In the second half, the Black Hawks started gashing the Aztec defense for chunk plays that led to 27 points. Williams Field improved to 3-0, while Corona is 2-1.

Key Plays

After the Blackhawks went down the field on 11 plays, they were forced to turn the ball over on downs at the Corona 9-yard line. Corona then drove 91-yards on 12 plays, capped with Aztecs senior QB Luke Farrell's 34-yard touchdown pass to give the Aztecs a 7-0 lead at the 2:10 mark of the first quarter.

Halfway through the third quarter Williams Field's junior QB Dominick Barjona hit senior receiver John Booker for an 11-yard score to give the Blackhawks their first lead of the game.

After recovering a fumble off a bad snap by the Blackhawks, Corona's Farrell punched it in from the 1-yard line to give the Aztecs their last lead of the game at 16-13 in the third quarter. Williams Field answered with a 67-yard touchdown bomb to retake the lead, 19-16.

After giving up two more scores to the Blackhawks, Corona answered with a touchdown that closed the score to 25-22.

Blackhawks' junior running back Romeo Jones then gashed Corona's defense for chunk yardage a number of times, including an 18-yard score to seal the win for Williams Field late in the fourth quarter.

Key Players

Williams Field QB Barjona threw two touchdowns, both to John Brooks, one of them a 67-yard bomb that put the Blackhawks further in front.

WFHS senior receiver John Booker scored two touchdowns and was on the receiving end of the 67-yard pass from his quarterback Barjona.

Jones fourth-quarter running helped keep the Corona offense off the field and sercure the Blacks Hawks' lead.

Corona's Josiah Smith made several key plays, including a long touchdown score and a 9-yard run that set up a Farrell TD run.

"We just didn't execute some stuff in the first half," - Williams Field head coach Steve Campbell said, adding, "It's never about the X's and O's, it's really about the Jimmy's and Joe's, and we just refocused and took advantage of our opportunities."

"We struggled tackling in the second half," Corona head coach Eric Lauer said. "We have to be able to be physical. Like we're either going to put them away or get put away, and we struggled on the back end with tackling."

"After that fumble I had in the second quarter, that flipped a switch for me," Williams Field junior running back Romeo Jones said. "I have to pay attention to the details, but when I got my my next opportunity I was able to make some big plays for my team."

Williams Field (3-0) will travel to Red Mountain (2-1) Sept. 18. Corona del Sol (2-1) will travel to Cactus Canyon (0-3) the same night.
