LAWRENCE, Kan. — Week 1 was no fluke from QB1.
No. 23-ranked Missouri football beat Kansas 38-21 on Friday night in its fiercest rival’s home stadium, and new starting quarterback Austin Simmons was one of the standout players on the field in his first Power-conference test as the Tigers’ field general.

Mizzou (2-0) now has back-to-back Border War wins. It looks a lot like Eli Drinkwitz’s offense has found a QB who can elevate the passing game, top.
Here’s what Simmons’ Border war statline looked like:
Austin Simmons’ stats
Simmons was 19-of-29 passing (65.5%) for 292 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
His touchdown throws were to Cayden Lee (27 yards), Donovan Olugbode (8 yards) and Brett Norfleet (13 yards)
Simmons has had at least 250 yards passing in both of his starts as a Mizzou player and is yet to throw an interception (7 TDs, 0 INTs).
Simmons’ best: The full first half, third quarter
Simmons was just about the only reason Missouri was tied at halftime. The quarterback put together a fantastic performance.
Simmons was everything you would want him to be as a passer. Any of Mizzou’s offensive struggles were not the fault of the QB.
Backed up in his own end zone on third-and-long, the QB diagnosed a corner blitz and got the Tigers out of trouble with a strike to Olugbode that wound up going for 65 yards.
He found Olugbode and Lee on out-route after out-route, utilizing the wide portion of the field extremely well.
Simmons’ worst: Again, not much
The reps against overmatched UAPB weren’t just a QB punching down on an inferior opponent, it seems. Simmons looked equally as impressive in his first Power-conference test.
You have to look hard to find a problem. And we mean really squint.
Early in the third quarter, he threw a ball to the right hashmarks intended for Cayden Lee. The wideout was well covered. The pass probably should have been picked off, and Lee’s attempt to catch it landed him a pretty hard hit.
That’s about the only ‘mistake’ we can think of from the QB’s night. Mizzou’s lingering problem on offense is its run-blocking and thinning tailback depth.
Grade: A+
Simmons made every single big throw that he needed to make.
That’s got to be exactly what Mizzou fans hoped they were getting when the Ole Miss transfer committed. He has the arm to make the throws. He showed some tremendous accuracy and has strong connections already with Mizzou’s best two receivers. He has not yet put the ball in harm’s way.
So far, so good in the Simmons era.
