It is expected to be a momentous battle because both players have been at the top of their game to reach this point. Shelton is coming off a 5-set upset victory over tournament favorite and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, while Tiafoe came from two sets down in his quarterfinal matchup to defeat Alex Michelsen.
No American player has won the U.S. Open since Andy Roddick was victorious in 2003.
Both Shelton and Tiafoe earned their victories in fifth-set tiebreakers. ESPN tennis analyst and former U.S. Open champion John McEnroe previewed the match prior to the broadcast and gave a slight nod to Shelton.
“I think if both players are playing at their best, I would give a slight advantage to Ben,” McEnroe said. “Frances loves the big occasions and so does Ben. It will be interesting to see which way the crowd goes and who they support.”
McEnroe pointed out that the difference in Tiafoe’s play this year is that he appears to be in much better condition than he was in 2025. Tiafoe has already come back from being two sets down to win two matches this year. He appeared to tire much easier a year ago and that’s the difference in his game, according to McEnroe.
Shelton has the bigger serve of the two players, and his second serve is especially dangerous. The winner will face Alexander Zverev, who was a straight-set winner in his semifinal match against Karen Khachanov.
