‘Horrible game from Drake Maye’ – Dave Portnoy not impressed with Patriots loss in NFL season opener

Barstool Sports founder and New England Patriots superfan Dave Portnoy was not impressed with his team’s loss in the NFL season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.
After seven months of stewing over their Super Bowl loss, the Patriots came out in Week 1 of the 2027 NFL season and couldn’t get their revenge, falling 13-10 to the champions.

The Patriots had the advantage of watching Seahawks QB Sam Darnold go down with an injury, but their failure to capitalise on the opportunity left Portnoy fairly upset.
Dave Portnoy slams the Patriots’ start to the 2026 NFL season
Portnoy shared a video on X where he discusses his immediate thoughts on what went down, using harsh words for QB Drake Maye while criticising the play-calling from the staff as well.
“Only the first game of the season, but that was tough to watch. Horrible game from Drake. That last throw? Disgusting.”
“We lose A.J. Brown to what I guess is a pretty severe injury. The new guy, Daubs, just has a disgusting drop. The play-calling s—- most of the night on offense. The game was right there for the taking. It’s only Week 1, but that was a s—- way to start the season.”
While the injury to Brown was a major blow to the Patriots, this game was very much in their grasp, as the Seahawks offense also looked rusty in this season-opening clash.
The Patriots were staying conservative with their plays. Maye was throwing out protected short-range passes as the Seahawks’ defense completely smothered New England’s run game.
Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty ImagesWith Brown out, the Patriots’ offense had no clear targets for Maye to aim at, with the young QB looking visibly frazzled towards the end when he went to make a hero throw that didn’t convert and ensured the loss.
Maye ended the game 23-of-33 for 178 yards and one touchdown, but his three interceptions and terrible 54.9 passer rating will make him take sole accountability for this loss.
