Mykhailo Mudryk was expected to go on loan this season – but few people expected Spurs to be his destination.

But the winger’s relationship with manager Roberto de Zerbi swung things that way, and a deal was done with a £75m option to buy included.

Now there’s bad news, however – less than two weeks after arriving, Mudryk has an injury and will be sidelined for six to eight weeks, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Poor Mudryk has had a tough time of things, and this is the last thing he needed. He was already getting some minutes for Spurs – by the time he’s back others may have established themselves.

If there is a slight silver lining, it’s that Mudryk probably needs time to adjust to the rhythms of normal football life anyway after a year and a half out of the game with a doping ban.

More than most players, just being back in team training will do him a lot of good because of his unique circumstances. Hopefully this injury at least allows him to do some group work long before the 8 weeks mentioned is up.

There have been some worrying rumours about Estevao Willian – but Joe Cole has talked some sense about him.

It’s an interesting team Alonso has picked for tonight – there’s lots of quality but a night off for the big guns up front.
