Bill Belichick, UNC football won't host recruits vs ETSU due to self-reported violation

UNC football won't be hosting any recruits for unofficial visits on Saturday, Sept. 12, as punishment for a self-reported recruiting violation that occurred last season.
The Tar Heels (1-0) play their home opener at Kenan Stadium against FCS opponent East Tennessee State (1-1) in Week 2, with kickoff set for noon in a game that will be televised on ESPN.

"Last season we self-reported a violation through our normal university compliance measures,” university spokesperson Kevin Best told The Fayetteville Observer.
“As a result, we are unable to host unofficial visits this weekend versus ETSU. We are still permitted to host official visits this weekend but have decided as a program to concentrate our official visits on the remaining five home games. The situation has been properly resolved through the NCAA process, and we have worked with the NCAA and University compliance on appropriate and corrective action."
TarHeel247 was first to report that UNC would not be hosting recruits this weekend.
Following its game against the Buccaneers, UNC won’t be back home until Oct. 3 against No. 4 Notre Dame (1-0). The Tar Heels travel to Clemson on Sept. 19 before an idle week to close out the first month of the season. In addition to the Fighting Irish, UNC has home games against Syracuse, Miami, Louisville and N.C. State.
Throughout home games last season, recruits on unofficial visits were seen watching warmups from the sidelines, having conversations with the coaching staff and posing for photographs with coach Bill Belichick. That's the normal routine for recruits during college football weekends in Chapel Hill.
During his weekly press conference ahead of the ETSU game, Belichick was asked about the NCAA rules and the program's compliance.
“I’m aware of all the NCAA rules,” he said. “I mean, I can’t tell you that I know the rulebook word for word. But, yeah.”
When asked whether he believes the program has an atmosphere of compliance, Belichick responded: "Yeah, totally."
As of Sept. 9, there are 17 commits in UNC’s 2027 recruiting class. During his weekly press conference ahead of the ETSU game, Belichick said there were “no updates” on filling the general manager role following Michael Lombardi’s resignation.
In the 2025 season, UNC defensive backs coach Armond Hawkins was suspended for violating NCAA rules related to extra benefits before returning to the team after two weeks.
