49ers play it safe with Nick Bosa as George Kittle practices Monday

There was a very notable absentee from the 49ers’ opening practice this week ahead of Thursday’s Week 1 clash with the Los Angeles Rams.

Defensive end Nick Bosa was not present at the section of practice open to the media in Melbourne as he continues to manage knee tendonitis related to his ACL reconstruction.
However, the former Defensive Player of the Year was seen in uniform without pads later on, suggesting the 49ers are simply playing it safe with the man set to lead their pass rush on Thursday.
Also absent was running back Christian McCaffrey, though given his likely workload and his injury history, a rest day for the 49ers’ most important skill-position player would be no surprise.
A number of previously injured 49ers were back today:

No Nick Bosa. Christian McCaffrey was on hand but did not practice. He might be on a practice pitch count all season.
Tuesday and Wednesday will give a better indication of where Bosa is at ahead of the season opener, but there’s reason to be more confident about the status of tight end George Kittle.
Kittle practiced on Monday, a clear sign that he is on track to play in Week 1, almost eight months to the day of the Achilles rupture he suffered in the 49ers’ playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
In short, the 49ers will likely have all their stars on offense for a potential shootout with the Rams, but questions linger around the most important player on one of the weakest areas of their defense.
