Virginia Tech opened a new era of Hokies football Saturday night with an emphatic 73-3 victory over VMI at a packed Lane Stadium.
The Hokies scored on their opening possession and never let up, finding the end zone 10 times in the rout.

Virginia Tech took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in seven plays, capped by Jeffrey Overton Jr.'s 50-yard touchdown run.
The Hokies' defense made an impact on VMI's next possession when captain Tyson Flowers blocked a punt, giving Virginia Tech its first blocked punt since November 2024.
Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer and the Hokies' offense continued to roll, scoring touchdowns on each of their first four possessions and putting points on the board on each of their first six drives.
It marked the first time Virginia Tech had scored on each of its first six possessions since Oct. 26, 2023, against Syracuse.
Grunkemeyer completed 17 of 20 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns in his Blacksburg debut.
Virginia Tech led 45-0 at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half, completing the season-opening rout.
