Musona’s omission was confirmed after Scottland FC released their team sheet for Sunday’s CAF Champions League clash against Nsingizini Hotspurs, with the veteran striker not included in the matchday squad.
Musona’s controversial reaction to substitution
The veteran forward’s omission came just days after he appeared to snub the Scottland FC technical team when he was withdrawn during Wednesday’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Rufaro Stadium.
Musona started the match but was substituted in the 53rd minute as Norman Mapeza made changes to his side.
However, instead of taking his place on the bench, the former Kaizer Chiefs striker walked straight into the dressing room.
His reaction reportedly left the Scottland FC coaching panel surprised, particularly given Musona’s reputation as a calm and experienced player.
The 36-year-old later returned to the technical area wearing a tracksuit. He greeted the Platinum FC technical team before taking a seat behind Mapeza and his coaching staff.
Mapeza refuses to discuss the incident
Mapeza was asked about Musona’s reaction after the match, but the Scottland FC coach refused to speculate about what had happened.
“I don’t know what was going in his head, so I cannot comment on that,” Mapeza said.
The incident nevertheless sparked debate on social media, with some fans questioning Musona’s decision to walk away from the technical area immediately after being substituted.
His reported omission from the squad for Sunday’s CAF Champions League match has now added another twist to the situation.
While Scottland have not publicly detailed whether Musona’s absence is disciplinary, the timing has inevitably raised questions about whether the forward is being punished for what has been described as disrespect towards the coaching staff.
Musona misses crucial CAF Champions League clash
Musona’s absence was a notable blow for Scottland FC during their first CAF Champions League campaign.
The Harare-based club faced Nsingizini Hotspurs of Eswatini in the first leg of the preliminary round on Sunday, with the match still locked at 0-0 at half-time.
Mapeza was expected to demand maximum concentration from his players as Scottland looked to secure a positive result in their continental campaign.
The coach had already indicated after the Platinum FC match that his attention had shifted towards the continental assignment.
Scottland therefore headed into the match with Musona’s omission providing an unexpected subplot.
For the veteran striker, the situation could also raise questions about his relationship with the coaching staff and whether he will return to the squad for the club’s next assignment.
