Lane Kiffin has barely had time to settle into life at LSU, and he is already picking a fight with the people running the conference.

The longtime SEC commentator believes that Kiffin is taking an enormous risk by challenging the conference over players who have already spent time in the NFL.
“I cannot believe that Lane Kiffin will put his entire career on the line by spitting in the face of the SEC.”

That is a pretty serious accusation, especially with Kiffin preparing for his first season at LSU. However, this fight did not start with Finebaum. Kiffin has defended LSU’s pursuit of former NFL players after the NCAA eligibility landscape opened the door for them to return to college football. Tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive lineman Zxavian Harris, both former Ole Miss players, are at the center of the dispute.
A federal judge has already granted an injunction allowing players in this situation to compete. That has given LSU some breathing room, except the SEC has continued its legal challenge against the school, Kiffin, and other officials.
Kiffin has also tried to explain why LSU went down this road. He said he took the issue to the team’s leadership council because he did not want players already on the roster to feel like they were being pushed aside. In Kiffin’s eyes, the players supported adding anyone who could help the Tigers win.
That explanation has not exactly quieted the noise. Swinney took a shot at the situation ahead of Clemson’s season opener against LSU, calling the state of college football embarrassing while making it clear Clemson would focus on its own program.
Finebaum had previously agreed with Swinney’s criticism, saying the Clemson coach was right even though Finebaum rarely sees eye to eye with him. His latest comments take the issue a step further.
For Kiffin, this is hardly the first time his methods have put him in the middle of a controversy. His departure from Ole Miss created a storm last year, and his history of pushing boundaries has followed him throughout his coaching career. However, at LSU, the stakes are different.
