Special edition U.S. dollar coins commemorating the country’s 250th birthday and bearing the likeness of President Donald Trump are now available for purchase.
The U.S. Mint began selling the gold-coloured coins as of noon Wednesday.
A roll of 25 coins will cost $61 (C$84.45) while a bag of 100 will set you back $154.50 (C$209.75). They are being marketed as a collectible.
The coins were first announced in July in honour of the semiquincentennial anniversary of the U.S. founding.
The Trump portrait side features the inscriptions “Liberty,” “In God We Trust” and “1776 ~ 2026.” The other side features an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows with “250” inscribed on a shield.
Will be fully in circulation by the fall
The U.S. Mint said a total of 250,000 coins were produced, and will be fully released into circulation this fall.
Other special edition coins include the Emerging Liberty dime, Enduring Liberty half dollar, and quarters with images of the Mayflower, Revolutionary War, the Liberty Bell, and U.S. Constitution.
CBS News reports Trump’s image was allowed to appear on American currency under a 2020 law for designs that commemorated the country’s 250th anniversary.
Second person on U.S. currency while alive
Trump is the second person to be featured on American currency while still alive.
Salmon P. Chase was the first person to appear on government-issued $1 bills in 1862 while still alive. He was the Treasury Secretary under President Abraham Lincoln’s administration during the Civil War.
He was the first person responsible for the design of the U.S. paper currency.
However, there was a huge public outcry over his image being featured on the currency that Congress passed a law in 1866 banning living people from appearing on U.S. currency.
In the 1920s, Chase was featured on the now out-of-print $10,000 bill.
