On August 29, 2026, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Bills are releasing veteran wide receiver and return specialist Hardman. The move comes after Buffalo gave Davis more opportunities at punt returner during the preseason, weakening Hardman’s strongest argument for a roster spot.

Hardman had been having trouble dropping balls during the preseason, thus making his performance crucial for the team. In the end, the Bills felt that holding on to Hardman was no longer necessary, even with the punt-return situation.

However, Davis has quietly emerged as the most important element of this decision. Already a key player as a running back, he has been their main kick returner, averaging the highest yards per kickoff return in the NFL (30.4) in 2025. He can also take care of punts if necessary.

There is one major problem, though. Davis muffed a punt during Buffalo’s preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with the Steelers recovering. The mistake came during one of his first opportunities to show he could handle the punt-return role, leaving the Bills with plenty to evaluate despite Hardman’s departure.

Still, the 28-year-old preseason struggles apparently outweighed that concern. He originally joined the Bills practice squad in November 2025 and appeared in three regular-season games and one playoff game. He didn’t record a catch during his regular-season appearances, while his return opportunities were limited.

That is a drastic difference from the athlete who would one day become an important weapon for the Kansas City Chiefs. Hardman was a second-round draft choice in 2019, won Pro Bowl and Second Team All-Pro accolades during his rookie season, and ended up being a three-time Super Bowl winner for the Chiefs. His defining highlight came when he scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII.

However, the Bills did need the 2026 version of Hardman, not the résumé. Dropped passes hurt his case, and Davis’ progress gave the Bills another path at returner.

Now Hardman is back on the market. The real question facing Buffalo now is whether Davis can parlay his success at kick returns into punt returns. Until then, Buffalo will open up a spot on its roster, but still not solve its biggest special-teams dilemma.
