Google Maps changes Lake Ontario to Lake America for U.S. users

Google said it has changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America for Google Maps users in the United States following U.S. President Donald Trump’s signing of an executive order to rename lake.

“Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS (Geographic Names Information System) for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names,” Google said on its blog on Saturday.

“These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now,” it added.

Trump signed the executive order officially changing the name of the international body of water jointly shared by Canada and the U.S. on Thursday after bilateral trade talks fell apart on Aug. 21.

“Canada has been ripping us off for a long time on trade, very sadly — even the military, we defend Canada for nothing, we don’t get anything,” the U.S. president said when he signed the order in the Oval Office. “They don’t pay us to defend Canada, but we defend Canada, and they understand that.”

Trump also compared the lake renaming to action he took last year to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

The president’s move has been derided by many Canadians, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiling a massive “Lake Ontario Now and Always” sign in Winona, Ont., on Saturday to send Trump a message.

“Long after President Trump is gone, it will still be called Lake Ontario,” Ford said in a video posted on his social media channels.

“But just in case President Trump or anyone else forgets, we’ve set up this sign to remind them it’s Lake Ontario now and forever,” he said.

MapQuest: ‘We’re not changing it’

While Google Maps is following the U.S. president’s orders, MapQuest is standing firm on keeping the name of Lake Ontario unchanged.

Shortly after Trump signed the executive order on Thursday afternoon, the online mapping company shared a screengrab of its map of Lake Ontario on X , captioning the post: “We’re not changing it.”

Later that day, it followed up with another post on X , playfully stating, “We’re not changing the name of Lake Ontario. Name it whatever you want at your leisure,” including a link to its website inviting users to come up with their own moniker for the lake, while also displaying names submitted by others.
