Jonas Urbig is continuing to establish himself as an important part of Bayern Munich’s goalkeeping group, and the young goalkeeper has a clear idea of what he brings to the position.

Asked how he would describe himself as a goalkeeper, Urbig did his best to break it down.
“I see my strengths in shot-stopping, 1v1 situations and playing with the ball at my feet. I like drawing the opposition in with shorter passes and then playing a long ball in behind their defensive line. I also like playing in a high position to defend the space behind our back line. And I believe I also have a certain mental strength, which you need in the FC Bayern environment in particular: you have to stay focused on yourself and not let yourself be distracted by everything going on around you, the discussions, the expectations, the comparisons,” Urbig told Säbener 51 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That final point could be particularly important for Urbig. Playing goalkeeper for Bayern Munich comes with enormous pressure. Every mistake is analyzed, every performance is compared and every decision can become a talking point. With Manuel Neuer still around, Urbig also faces the inevitable comparisons with one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history.
Yet Urbig appears to understand that the key is not trying to escape those comparisons, but remaining focused on his own development. Urbig’s ability on the ball, willingness to play high and confidence in 1v1 situations fit naturally into the modern goalkeeper profile that Vincent Kompany wants at Bayern Munich.
The talent is clearly there. Now, Urbig will look to continue developing the consistency and mentality required to become Bayern Munich’s long-term No. 1.
