Michigan State WRs coach Courtney Hawkins talks Spartans WR room

Michigan State football has a new look coaching staff in 2026, with Pat Fitzgerald taking over the program and entering his first season with the Spartans. While most of his staff is new, there were a couple of holdovers from the last regime, including Courtney Hawkins, who has been the Spartans wide receivers coach for three straight coaching staffs.

Hawkins has been a mainstay in East Lansing, and continues to show why he is a value to Michigan State football year in and year out. On Wednesday, Hawkins spoke to the media about the state of his wide receiver room.
- “Guys are eager to prove themselves. I think it will be more of a collective deal. This is their opportunity to introduce themselves to the world.”
- “At this point we haven’t narrowed it down to a depth chart standpoint, but you could see 7 or 8 guys, just depending on the game and situation.”
- “We have focused on technical route running, fundamental route running. I felt like he came here and did some things well, but he figured out he can’t just be an athlete playing receiver. He’s done a tremendous job.”
- “Rod is a tremendous human being. Through this whole process, he never wavered. He came in here every single day and you would’ve never known what kind of cloud was over his head.”
- “Blocking is 95% want to, and I feel like I have a lot of doers in my room. We stand on no block, no rock.”
- “One of the faster guys on the team. He’s flashed during fall camp and gained some weight since he got here. I think he’s ready to contribute and we’ll see what that looks like in the coming weeks.”
